Thanks for dropping in! I’m Lucas Tomoana SOC ACO, but some people call me L.T.

Tomoana (pronouned Tore-more-ah-nah) is my father’s name, and it’s Maori, meaning “of the sea.” My ancestor rescued several people from the ocean, which is how we came by the name. My mother is a Karene, and she holds the title of Samoan Matai (Chief). The tattoo on my arm is dedicated to her.

Although keen to follow my military father by enlisting in the Australian Army Reserves while studying at Griffith Film School, I soon discovered I was much better at shooting film than rifles. I was awarded the Cinematography Award for my graduating year and selected (one of 10 people) to study cinematography at AFTRS, our National Film School in Sydney.

I started my career travelling and shooting docos, but honed my craft by shooting commercials. This is where I learned to work with larger crews, light bigger setups, and operate dollies, cranes, and remote heads. So far, I’ve won 23 x ACS Awards, including 9 x Gold and 1 x National Award of Distinction. In 2022, I was fortunate to receive 2 x Golds and 1 Bronze in the National/International Commercial category.

By 2021, I made the decision to specialise as a Camera Operator. That same year I was named a ‘Rising Talent of Cinematography’ by Inside Film Magazine. In 2025, I became an Active Member of the Society of Camera Operators in the United States. The following year in 2026, I became a Full Member of the Association of Camera Operators in the United Kingdom. Both have been a career highlight for me.

During COVID, we started a podcast called Cinemapodgrapher, to help people navigate the film industry. The podcast has been running for almost 5 years, with over 155 episodes, 110k downloads and listeners in 85 countries.
